This course is about how the manager of a company/structural unit can effectively manage employees: to explain company goals and procedures, issue work tasks and control their implementation, motivate employees, provide support on an everyday basis and facilitate collaboration.

It is also about the types of resources available to a manager and how they can be used to decrease stress in complex situations: how to inspire and facilitate proactivity and productivity in employees.

Aim of the course: to provide participants with knowledge and practical skills for the effective management of employees.

Target audience: Middle level managers – who have limited experience in managing employees, and also those who need to put what they have understood from experience into place.

Programme:

In the first part of the course, we will be concentrating on the management process and elements of the work execution management cycle that help to effectively reach goals. 

In the second part of the course, we will be working with practical tools, trying out various approaches to effective communication with employees and teams. 

Session 1. (3h)

1. Introduction. The role of the modern manager:

  • Management models and styles.
  • Managing as influencing.
  • The manager’s image (the real and the ideal).
  • Management orientations and their features.
  • A company’s, manager’s and employees’ mutual perceptions, expectations and concerns.

2. Work execution management cycle – how do we obtain and ensure clarity?:

  • The direct manager’s roles in managing the work process.
  • How to set goals, agree on their execution and quality criteria.
  • How to plan and control activities.
  • Delegation and authorization - how to maximize employees’ ability.
  • Evaluating work execution.
  • How to guide the employee towards development.

Session 2. (3h):

Work with participants’ situations. How to resolve everyday management issues using the work execution management cycle. Various resolution strategies and effective communication for such situations.

Session 3. (3 h)

1. A manager's communication. Everyday interaction. Persuading and influencing. Attention, interest and motivation:

  • How to understand and be understood; rational and emotional aspects of communication.
  • How to “read” how employees are feeling and what they are thinking.
  • Communication on site and remotely.
  • The employee interview. Effective feedback. Praise and criticism.
  • A manager’s emotions and feelings as an aid/hurdle in providing feedback.
  • Motivation, involvement and employee development, incl., remotely: best practice and experience.

Session 4. (3 h)

1. Creating and developing a team: best practice and experience.

  • The team creation process.
  • Roles in a team and mutual collaboration.
  • Successful team development – the main conditions.
  • Social competence – readiness to collaborate.
  • Stages of team development and conflict resolution.

Winding up, conclusions and mutual feedback

Participation fees include handouts, coffee breaks and lunch.
